New Smaller Sized Oakleaf Hydrangeas Introduced

I love Oakleaf Hydrangea with their large leaves that resemble those on Oak trees and their big, striking flowers. However, it's often difficlut to place them in the garden as most are quite tall and wide.

The Agricultural Research Service has introduced two new Oakleaf Hydrangea cultivars and they should be available in the next year or two. The names are 'Ruby Slippers' and 'Munchkin'.

Each gets to be 3-4 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide.

The flowers of 'Ruby Slippers' open white and then go from pale pink to a deeper rose. Those of 'Munchkin' also open white but turn to a medium pink.

Oakleaf Hydrangea can be used in areas that are shady or part shade/part sun. Use one as a focal point or mass a few or many for a striking statement when they flower. I, for one, am very excited about these new plants, as I have always loved them but found their large sizes limiting in a landscape design.

About Me

My Photo
Landscape design has been an important part of my life for many years. Whether it be creating a master plan, designing a small garden, selecting paving materials, or choosing plant material for color throughout the year, I design landscapes that are extremely creative and colorful. It is very satisfying to take a property and either enhance it or create a totally new picture. I live and work in New Jersey, but I also provide online designs.
