How do you go about deciding what size fountain to incorporate into a design?
Whether it be a simple, small focal point or a large fountain as an integral part of the design, getting the scale right is important.
Recently I have been working on a project with a driveway leading up to a front, circular driveway design. In the center is a fairly large area with a central formal pool and fountain. Part of the design process included deciding just how high and wide the fountain should be.
Size is not something that one can give a definitive answer to, as it depends on so many factors in the landscape. Impacting the decision might be the residence size and style, surrounding buildings, views and so on.
For this project, I decided on a fountain made of limestone. I found that the bronze fountains just did not go with the house and were too ornate. The fountain I chose is beautiful in its simplicity, yet powerful. It has two bowls, water trickling down from one to the other. It rests on a sculptured, low pedestal. The fountain is 6'9" high, and the larger bowl is the lower one. It is 3'7" wide.
The pool itself is 14 feet in diameter. This sounds large, but as with many landscape elements, it looks smaller out in the wide open.
You can see a picture of the fountain here. It is the lower image (Longshadow) and the pool surround in the image is not part of the design...it's too small. A custom stone pool wall was designed.
