A Small Butterfly Bush?

There is a new Butterfly Bush that will be available this spring. It is called Lo & Behold™ Butterfly Bush, or Buddleia x 'Blue Chip', introduced by Spring Meadow Nursery.

I am very excited about this new introduction. I have loved the Butterfly Bush for a long time. "Why?" you might ask.

1. It has beautiful purple, elongated flowers. Well, they don't have to be purple. They also come in white and various pinks.
2. Butterflies flock to it. In mid-summer, it is rare that you don't see some hovering around the flowers.
3. It has a VERY long season of bloom. Now, THAT I like. It just seems to go on and on. If you pinch back the spent flowers, it will like it even more.
4. They come in different sizes. Up to this point in time, you could find them very large or smaller ones, about 4+ feet high.

However, this new one is even smaller. It is about two feet high by about two feet, or a little more, wide. How many times am I searching for this type of plant? Very often. This type of plant can be used alone as a spot of color near the front door. It can be used as a low mass. It can also be used as another layer in front of dark evergreen shrubs....with long lasting color!

It is also deer resistant! This is a plant I am going to have to try.

Landscape design has been an important part of my life for many years. Whether it be creating a master plan, designing a small garden, selecting paving materials, or choosing plant material for color throughout the year, I design landscapes that are extremely creative and colorful. It is very satisfying to take a property and either enhance it or create a totally new picture. I live and work in New Jersey, but I also provide online designs.
